The Federal Government has dismissed speculations about reviving the botched Nigeria Air project with Ethiopian Airlines, following recent remarks by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.

During a handover ceremony in Abuja, Kana had referenced plans to make the national carrier a reality, sparking inquiries and public interest. However, in a statement issued yesterday, he clarified that his remarks were not an indication of plans to revive the controversial Nigeria Air deal with Ethiopian Airlines.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I never said there is a mandate to revive the botched Nigeria Air deal with Ethiopian Airlines. I received no such instruction,” Kana said.

He explained that his comments referred more broadly to the administration’s vision of exploring the feasibility of a national carrier project under the guidance of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, if it is deemed beneficial to the country.

“I was only referring to the general vision of the administration to still consider a national carrier project if it is favourable to the country and under the guidance and directives of Mr. President and the minister of aviation. I hope this clarifies all the ambiguities surrounding my earlier statement on this issue,” Kana added.

The Nigeria Air project, championed by former Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika, was suspended by the Federal Government after allegations of corruption marred its implementation. On August 6, 2024, Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa of the Federal High Court ordered a halt to the project, citing irregularities and legal challenges.

Kana also reiterated his commitment to working closely with Keyamo to ensure the advancement of the aviation sector. “On a personal note, I pledge absolute loyalty to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, and remain dedicated to working closely with him to drive the ministry’s agenda forward,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary assured Nigerians of efforts to modernize and sanitize the nation’s airports while exploring innovative solutions for the aviation sector.

“Together, we will ensure that the future of aviation in Nigeria is bright, innovative, and reflective of the aspirations of our great nation,” Kana concluded.
