The Federal Government has announced a temporary closure of the Ijora-Marine Bridge in Lagos for urgent maintenance works, beginning Saturday, May 18, and lasting for 21 days.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, the closure will commence at 7:00 a.m. on May 18 and affect various sections of the bridge, some of which will be completely shut while others will undergo partial closure.

Okay.ng reports that the repairs will include lifting the bridge deck to replace worn-out bearings and other critical maintenance tasks aimed at enhancing the safety and durability of the structure.

“We understand the inconvenience this may cause, but this is a necessary step to keep the bridge in good condition and ensure the safety of all road users,” Kesha said.

She further explained that traffic diversion plans had been carefully coordinated and that officials would be deployed to manage vehicular and pedestrian movements, ensuring minimal disruption.

“Safety signs and traffic management tools will be put in place to minimise disruption,” she noted.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and thank members of the public for their patience.”

The federal government has also urged residents, commuters, and business owners in the affected areas to plan their travel accordingly and cooperate fully with traffic authorities during the closure period.
