Kenneth Gbagi, a former Minister of Education and governorship candidate in Delta State, has died at the age of 62. According to a statement released by his family, Gbagi passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

Gbagi was a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and education. He served as Minister of State for Education under former President Goodluck Jonathan and later became the governorship candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 Delta State elections, ultimately losing to incumbent Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Born in September 1961 in Delta State, Gbagi had a diverse educational background, studying political science, criminology, and law in various institutions. He also worked in the Foreign Service and taught criminology during his National Youth Service Corps program.

Gbagi’s death has been met with condolences from across the political spectrum, including from Governor Oborevwori, who described his passing as “tragic, unfortunate, and heart-wrenching.”
