A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted former commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari, a two-week bail after spending 27 months in detention.

The court’s decision is aimed at allowing Kyari to return home and conclude his mother’s burial rites.

Kyari, who has been in custody since his arrest on February 14, 2022, over drug-related charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), will have his bail application determined on Friday, May 31.

The charges relate to allegations of his involvement in drug trafficking, a case that has garnered significant attention.

The former police officer’s mother passed away in the early hours of Sunday, May 5, 2024. She was survived by ten children, including Abba Kyari, who is the eldest. Due to his detention, Kyari was unable to attend her burial.

The community in Borno State, however, turned out in large numbers to pay their respects to Yachilla, who was interred according to Islamic rites on the same day.
