Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has described the #EndSARS protest as one of the most challenging moments of his leadership, reflecting on the demonstrations that shook Nigeria in October 2020.

Sanwo-Olu shared this during a discussion with 30 fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy on Monday in Ikeja. The academy focuses on nurturing young individuals committed to shaping Nigeria’s future.

“One of my toughest moments as a leader was during the EndSARS protest,” Sanwo-Olu said. “We have been tested as a government, but we must continue to put the needs of Lagosians beyond our struggles as a responsive and responsible government.”

The #EndSARS protest began after a viral video allegedly showed a young man killed by officers of the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The protest quickly gained traction, with Nigerian youths demanding the disbandment of SARS due to widespread police brutality. The demonstrations later expanded to highlight issues such as poor governance and unemployment, drawing tens of thousands of participants and global attention.

While largely peaceful, the protests, particularly in Lagos, were met with violent repression, leading to numerous deaths and injuries among demonstrators. The events, especially the controversial incident at the Lekki Toll Gate, remain a source of national debate and scrutiny.

Sanwo-Olu said the moment tested his leadership but emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs of citizens.

“No bad news stays forever. Work hard to create good news and make sure people listen to it,” he advised.

The governor also paid tribute to the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, former governor of Lagos State, urging the academy fellows to emulate his exemplary leadership.

“I know your generation may not know who Alhaji Lateef Jakande was,” Sanwo-Olu said. “The late former governor of Lagos epitomised leadership. That is why we are still talking about him today.”

He encouraged the fellows to focus on solutions rather than challenges, reminding them that strong leadership is about creating opportunities and ensuring progress for the people.
