Senate President Godswill Akpabio made significant statements on Sunday, addressing the economic challenges inherited by the Bola Tinubu administration and shedding light on allegations against former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Speaking at Senator Barinada Mpigi’s Thanksgiving service in Koroma, Tai Local Government Area, Rivers State, Akpabio characterized the economic situation left by Emefiele as “terrible,” suggesting uncertainty regarding potential charges against him.

Akpabio remarked, “We did not even know what to charge him with – whether for putting foam on top of the bill, illegal firearm possession, printing notes without income. I don’t know what we are going to charge him with,” highlighting the complexity of the situation surrounding Emefiele’s tenure.

The Senate President attributed current economic woes and hunger to past policies, acknowledging the impact on the populace. He assured Nigerians of ongoing efforts to improve security and living standards while urging patience, citing the enormity of challenges accumulated over decades.

In addressing Emefiele’s situation, Akpabio referenced the Federal Government’s accusations related to financial crimes, following his removal from the CBN governorship by Tinubu in June 2023.

The charges against Emefiele were revised on January 18, expanding from six to twenty counts, including allegations of criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to conduct forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
