Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party, the ‘America Party’, signaling a bold move to reshape the American political landscape.
Musk made the declaration on Saturday, just a day after polling his followers on X, formerly Twitter, asking whether the U.S. needed a new political party. The response was overwhelming.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it!” Musk wrote. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
The announcement comes amid a heated political atmosphere following the passage of the “Big Beautiful Bill”, a contentious legislative package signed by President Donald Trump on Friday. The bill includes tax cuts, increased defence spending, and an immigration crackdown, but critics say it will significantly slash essential services such as Medicaid, the federal health program for low-income Americans.
Musk had openly opposed the bill, claiming it was fiscally irresponsible and damaging to the future of the country.
His opposition was believed to be partly rooted in how the bill impacted electric vehicle mandates, potentially threatening sales of Tesla’s EVs. However, Musk has denied any self-serving motives, insisting his objections were about principle.
The friction between Musk and Trump escalated publicly. Musk, who had briefly served as an adviser to the president, said he was disappointed with the bill, and accused Trump of showing ingratitude.
“Without me, Trump would have lost the election,” Musk said, sparking a sharp response from the president, who warned of “serious consequences” if Musk were to support Democratic candidates against Republican lawmakers backing the bill.
As the bill faced final debates in the Senate on Monday, Musk issued a stark warning to Republican lawmakers those who vote in favor will lose their primary next year.
