The Edo State government has accused leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of instigating insecurity within the state, claiming it is a deliberate attempt to destabilize Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration. A statement released by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, asserted that intelligence suggests PDP leaders are connected to recent incidents of kidnapping and violent crime. The government contends that the PDP’s public expressions of concern about insecurity are disingenuous.
“The PDP’s sudden expressions of concern are a tactic to distract from their own involvement,” Itua stated. “It is alleged that during the 2024 gubernatorial elections, these same individuals provided weapons to non-state actors, many of which remain unrecovered and are now being used by criminals against Edo citizens.”

The government further alleged that the PDP’s strategy involves creating fear, spreading misinformation, and undermining the current administration. “Their objective is to destabilize the state, erode public trust in Governor Okpebholo’s leadership, and propagate a false narrative of failure,” Itua claimed.
The Edo State government has called upon security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the alleged involvement of PDP leaders in the surge of kidnappings and armed violence. “No individual or political group should be permitted to jeopardize the state’s security for political advantage. Those found responsible must face legal consequences,” the statement read.

The Okpebholo administration reiterated its commitment to addressing insecurity and safeguarding the lives and property of Edo residents. The government urged citizens to remain alert and avoid being swayed by what it described as the PDP’s deceptive strategies.
“Insecurity persists when those responsible believe they are immune from prosecution. It is imperative that security agencies demonstrate otherwise,” Itua concluded.
