The governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has ordered an investigation into the death of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100-level microbiology student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in the state.

Okay.ng recalls that Nigerians on Sunday demanded justice for the victim, Uwa, who died after being raped inside a church of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

According to reports, the student was assaulted and raped while she was reading inside the parish near Ikpoba Hill in Benin.

Some men were reported to have made their way into the church auditorium where they hit her in the head with a fire extinguisher, which led to her death.

Reacting to this, Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, said Obaseki has ordered the police and other security agencies to fish out the culprits and bring them to justice.

The statement read partly: “The governor is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa. We have been in consultation with the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and have mandated thorough investigation of the matter to ensure that those who are responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice.”

Furthermore, Osagie said the state government would ensure that the full weight of the law run its course and that the Violence Against Persons (VAP) Law and other such laws related to rape and sexual abuse are exploited to get justice for the deceased.

He also expressed the Governor’s deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.
