In a significant address at the June 12 Annual Democracy Day National Dialogue in Ikeja, political economist Professor Pat Utomi called on President Bola Tinubu to undertake a comprehensive restructuring of Nigeria before the 2027 general elections. The dialogue, hosted by the June 12 Pro-Democracy Movement of Nigeria, focused on the theme “Democracy Without A Democratic Constitution: Which Way for Nigeria?”

Utomi underscored that Nigeria’s current democracy is hampered by an outdated political and economic framework and the “unworkable 1999 constitution.” He asserted, “The agitation for total restructuring will stabilize and advance democracy in the country. This is because the present democracy is not the type of democracy Chief Abiola sacrificed his life for.”

He urged Nigerians to embrace restructuring as a means to deepen democracy and strengthen national cohesion. Utomi also appealed to President Tinubu to heed the restructuring demands of ethnic groups such as Afenifere and Ohaneze, suggesting that this would enhance the President’s credibility with voters.

The political economist warned citizens to be vigilant against anti-democratic elements seeking to undermine Nigeria’s democratic gains. He also commended Nigerians for their sacrifices in the struggle for democratic governance.

Former Finance Minister Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, explaining that the drive for a better nation has inspired him and other intellectuals to advocate for a new, functional constitution.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Dr. Wahab Shittu emphasized the need for a democratic culture and a constitution truly led by the people. He criticized the current 1999 constitution for lacking a referendum process, stating, “The new constitution would be subjected to the referendum of the Nigerian people.”

The June 12 Pro-Democracy Movement urged President Tinubu to initiate a national dialogue and consultation process aimed at producing a democratic people’s constitution. Movement convener Mr. Wale Okunniyi expressed hope that the President would fulfill this expectation, thereby honoring the sacrifices of June 12 activists.
