DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) platform, has achieved a significant milestone by overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT as the most downloaded free application on the Apple Store in the United States.

DeepSeek, launched in 2023, is an advanced AI search platform that employs deep learning algorithms and natural language processing (NLP) to provide highly relevant, intent-driven results.

It comes in two versions: DeepSeek-R1, a standard model, and DeepSeek-R1-Zero, which boasts unsupervised fine-tuning for enhanced reasoning capabilities.

According to Reuters, the AI application’s recent surge in popularity saw it dethrone ChatGPT, a feat accomplished despite ongoing US restrictions on the export of advanced chips to China.

DeepSeek’s developers have credited the platform’s success to its efficient training process, which reportedly utilized Nvidia’s H800 chips.

Remarkably, the training cost was about $6 million, a fraction of the typical expenses for developing cutting-edge AI systems.

The company shared a performance comparison with OpenAI on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on January 20
