The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has hailed Nigerian music superstar Davido for his “patriotic representation of Nigeria” during a recent international interview, praising his efforts to reshape global perceptions of the country.
Okay.ng reports that the commendation came in the form of an official letter dated May 16, 2025, following Davido’s appearance on the Culture Knock Out (CKO) podcast, a French-speaking platform, where he urged the world to see Lagos and Nigeria through their own eyes rather than stereotypes.
In the interview, Davido had described Lagos as one of the best cities in Africa for nightlife and entertainment, while also noting that everywhere in the world carries its own dangers.
“Everywhere is dangerous. The Congo is dangerous, Benin is dangerous, Paris is dangerous, everywhere is dangerous. Even in Atlanta, you could go somewhere and get shot. So that makes it dangerous,” Davido said during the show.
Reacting to his remarks, the NOA applauded the singer’s position, calling it a “patriotic stand” that contributes positively to the country’s image abroad.
“I write to first convey our congratulations for the several feats of accomplishment you have recorded in your musical career and for making our country proud on the global stage,” the agency stated in the letter addressed to Davido.
“News of your patriotic stand during your recent interview on the French-speaking CKO Channel, where you encouraged visitors to experience Lagos firsthand… reached us at the National Orientation Agency with great delight.”
The Agency noted that Davido’s perspective helps counter negative narratives often associated with Nigeria, while aligning with the goals of the newly launched National Identity Project — an initiative aimed at promoting Nigerian values and reshaping both domestic and international perceptions of the country.
“It is true that we need to tell our own positive stories… We need to put out our national identity in a way that leaves the world in no doubt as to who we really are and how blessed our country is, in spite of our challenges,” the statement added.
The NOA further acknowledged Davido’s role as a cultural ambassador and urged him to continue projecting the best of Nigeria, while pledging its own commitment to tackling the societal issues that fuel negative impressions.
“We count on you to continue to project the best of us, while we work to redress the negativities in public and social life. Once again, please accept our hearty congratulations.”
Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, has long been seen as one of Nigeria’s biggest global music exports, with numerous accolades and chart-topping hits to his name.
He is also known for promoting African excellence and collaborating with international artists while proudly representing his heritage.
