A Court sitting in Abuja, yesterday sentenced three labourers to two months imprisonment each for stealing 67 tubers of yam.

According to DailyTrust, the convicts, Aminu Ahmadu, 25, Isiaka Hassan, 21, and Sani Isah, 25, all residents of Kapwa village, Airport road, Abuja, were convicted under section 79 and 287 of the Penal Code.
The police prosecutor, Ndidi Ukao, told the court that the convicts were arrested following a complaint by one Mr. Sakoma Yeyeyi, of Lugbe Primary School, Airport road.

She said the three accused persons went into the complainant’s farm near River Park Estate, Abuja, and harvested 67 tubers of yam.

She said Hassan and two other accused persons were subsequently arrested and handed over to the police on that same day.

They pleaded guilty when the charges were read to them in court and they were sentenced to two months imprisonment each, with an option of N6,000 fine even as they pleaded for mercy.
The presiding judge, Garba Ogbede, warned them to desist from committing crime, while he ordered that the tubers of yam be returned to the rightful owner.
