The Anambra State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt to track down the armed assailants responsible for the abduction of an unidentified resident in Awka, the capital of Anambra State.
The abduction, which took place in the early hours of Friday, saw three gunmen operating in an unregistered stainless-coloured Toyota Highlander seize their victim near his home. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers fired shots indiscriminately before forcibly taking the individual away.
A video of the incident, which has been widely shared on social media, captures the moment the armed men, driving a Toyota Highlander without a license plate, unleashed gunfire and abducted the victim.
Okay.ng reports that, in a statement released on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the police have obtained the viral video and are leveraging it in their ongoing rescue efforts. He emphasized the Command’s commitment to ensuring the safe return of the abducted individual.
Ikenga highlighted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the bravery of the citizen who recorded the video, noting that the footage is proving invaluable to the investigation and rescue operation.
He stated, “The Anambra State Police Command will leverage on the viral video of the criminal operations of three armed men who operated in a stainless colored Highlander without a plate number, shot indiscriminately and abducted an unsuspecting victim in the early hours of June 27, 2025 at Awka for investigations.
“Given the above, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has hailed the bravery of the individual who recorded the video, as it is aiding the rescue operations and potentially helping to save the kidnapped victim.
“The CP noted that such courageous act demonstrates the impact of community involvement in supporting Law Enforcement efforts.
“The Command aims to identify the suspects, gather evidence, and potentially apprehend those involved in the criminal activities.”
The police have assured the public that all necessary resources are being deployed to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, while also urging residents to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies to enhance security in the state.
