The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) has chosen “Mami Wata,” directed by CJ Obasi, as Nigeria’s entry for the International Feature Film (IFF) category of the 96th Academy Awards scheduled for next year.

The film, known for its compelling portrayal of a West African goddess and her diminishing influence on a local village, secured the highest number of votes from the 14-member selection committee.

In an official statement released on Sunday, October 15, 2023, the NOSC highlighted the reasons for selecting “Mami Wata,” citing its impactful themes and the unique narrative approach taken in exploring the story of pre- and post-colonial African societies.

The film was also lauded for its outstanding technical and artistic qualities.

Stephanie Linus, chairperson of the committee, expressed her excitement about the nomination and emphasized the importance of Nigerian filmmakers continually improving their skills and raising their production standards to global levels.

She said: “I’m excited to announce a milestone in our NOSC journey: our first Pidgin film submission to the Academy, marking our commitment to diversity and global representation.”

The final determination regarding “Mami Wata’s” inclusion on the shortlist of contenders at the 96th Oscars ceremony, scheduled for March 10, 2024, will be made by the IFF Executive Committee.
