Authorities in Cameroon have repatriated some 300 Nigerians who fled the insecurity caused by Boko Haram.

The Nigerians who were settled in the locality of Meme in the Far North region of Cameroon were escorted and handed over to Nigerian authorities on Saturday.

The repatriation was supervised by Cameroon’s Far North regional governor, Mr Midjiyawa Bakary, who said the Nigerians ran into Cameroon for safety following raids by jihadists.

About one hundred people escaping fighting between the Nigerian army and the Boko Haram militants flee into Cameroon on an average day, according to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

At least 12,000 other Nigerian refugees will soon be repatriated, according to the divisional officer of the Cameroonian border town of Fotokol, Mr. Mamoudu Umaru.

The Boko Haram insurgency in north-eastern Nigeria has driven thousands from their homes and also displaced many Cameroonians within the country.

By December 2015, a total of 18,600 Nigerian refugees had already been repatriated back home from Cameroon.
