Tragedy has struck the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State today where at least 25 people have lost their lives and many more have sustained injuries due to escalating attacks reportedly perpetrated by herdsmen. The agrarian communities are now gripped by fear, with numerous families forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighboring states to escape the violence, okay.ng reports.

The dire situation has prompted local vigilante groups to voice their concerns, criticizing the perceived slow response from security agencies. Their alarm follows recent brutal incidents, including the killings of a vigilante and other community members, as well as kidnappings, which have created an atmosphere of constant fear and uncertainty among residents of Uzo-Uwani.

Community leaders have urgently appealed to Governor Peter Mbah for intervention, expressing their deep frustration over the alleged inaction of the Uzo-Uwani LGA Chairman. They report a disturbing pattern of frequent abductions and killings of farmers over the past two months, with no signs of the violence abating, leaving communities feeling increasingly vulnerable.

In a desperate move, opinion leaders are now urging communities to consider self-defense, referencing warnings about Fulani aggression. The situation is further complicated by the state government’s apparent lack of action on a proposed security summit. The escalating violence in Uzo-Uwani underscores the urgent need for effective security measures to protect the lives and livelihoods of the affected communities.
