President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers, including a realistic minimum wage, during a meeting with labour leaders in Abuja.

The President met with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) to discuss the minimum wage and other issues affecting workers. Tinubu emphasized the importance of a fair and realistic minimum wage, noting that Nigerian workers deserve better wages and working conditions.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by workers, the President called for a pragmatic approach to the minimum wage question, considering the country’s economic realities. He suggested a more frequent review of the minimum wage, rather than the current five-year interval.

Labour leaders, Comrade Joe Ajaero (NLC) and Comrade Festus Osifo (TUC), emphasized the need for an upward adjustment to the minimum wage, citing the difficulties faced by Nigerian workers. They commended the President on the Supreme Court’s judgement affirming local government autonomy and expressed hope for its positive impact on the country’s progress.
