Manchester United’s Ashley Young has been charged with violent conduct following an incident in Saturday’s match against Southampton, the FA has announced.

The United star is likely to land a three-match ban after referee Craig Pawson missed the incident which saw him elbow Southampton star Dusan Tadic in the stomach.

An FA statement read: “Young’s charge follows an incident during Saturday’s game against Southampton which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video. He has until 5pm today (31/12/17) to respond.”

Discussing the incident, Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino said: “I haven’t seen the replay but it is difficult for the referee to see in one second what happened in all different places – but I have to respect the decision.”

Pellegrino may still be chasing an elusive win, having gone more than a month since the 4-1 defeat of Everton, but was buoyed by his team’s character in the 0-0 draw.

“For sure we are really pleased, not just for the point, we are happy because our performance was really good from the beginning to the end,” he said.

“In the way we approached the game, good focus, attitude, personality. United were never comfortable on the pitch and were always uncomfortable on the pitch.”
