The Federal Government has secured a substantial N1 billion grant from the Airtel Africa Foundation. This financial injection is earmarked for the ambitious 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative, a cornerstone of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s drive to position Nigeria as a pivotal force in the global technology sphere.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, articulated the strategic importance of this collaboration after receiving the grant from Airtel Africa Foundation Chairman, Dr. Segun Ogunsanya. “Today, we received a N1 billion grant from the Airtel Africa Foundation for our 3MTT Nigeria programme,” Tijani affirmed, emphasizing the grant’s role in “hands-on training, community engagement, and job placement initiatives.”

This funding will directly empower over 25,000 Nigerians with critical technical skills, addressing the nation’s pressing need to bridge the digital divide. As Tijani noted, the 3MTT program is a “cornerstone of the government’s commitment to building a robust digital economy in Nigeria.”

Airtel Africa CEO, Segun Ogunsanya, underscored the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s economic development. “Our N1 billion support is a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future workforce and prosperity,” Ogunsanya stated, highlighting Airtel’s belief in the transformative power of technology and digital skills. “We believe in the power of technology and digital skills to unlock new opportunities, drive economic growth and uplift communities.”

The 3MTT program, which began with an initial cohort of 30,000 participants, has since expanded to include 270,000 more, demonstrating the government’s commitment to scaling the initiative. I understand, as many Nigerians do, the urgent need for tangible opportunities, especially for our youth. This initiative aims to provide that, by not just training, but also connecting people to real jobs.

The program’s phased execution, developed in partnership with key stakeholders, reflects a comprehensive approach to talent development. The government’s focus on collaboration with training providers, educational institutions, development agencies, and the private sector is crucial for sustained success.

The human angle here is profound. This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about empowering individuals, families, and communities. Imagine the young graduate, previously adrift in a sea of unemployment, now equipped with cutting-edge skills and a pathway to a fulfilling career. This grant, and the 3MTT program, offer that tangible hope.

However, the challenge remains significant. Achieving the 3 million target requires sustained effort and investment. The government must ensure transparency and accountability in fund disbursement and program implementation. Furthermore, the program’s long term success will depend on its ability to adapt to the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

This collaboration between the government and Airtel Africa Foundation signifies a vital step in Nigeria’s journey towards digital transformation. By investing in the nation’s youth, we are not only building a skilled workforce but also laying the foundation for a more prosperous and equitable future.
