Labour Party to Expel Peter Obi Over Dual Party Allegiance, Arabambi Confirms

The Labour Party is set to convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting aimed at expelling Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, due to his involvement in activities deemed anti-party. Abayomi Arabambi, the factional national publicity secretary, revealed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday.

Arabambi emphasized that Obi’s recent endorsement of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a coalition-backed party, violates the party’s constitution, as it is unconstitutional for a member to belong to two political parties simultaneously. “We’re convening a NEC meeting where Peter Obi will be expelled. You know he was on suspension before he went ahead to do the anti-party activities. You don’t go and join a political party, and at the same time you still put your leg in another political party. He knows it’s unconstitutional to belong to two political parties at the same time,” Arabambi stated.

He further accused Obi of initiating the crisis within the Labour Party and questioned his suitability to lead any political organization. Despite these allegations, Obi maintains that he remains a Labour Party member and clarified in a recent interview that while he supports the ADC movement, he is not a member of that party. The former Anambra State governor also reiterated his intention to run for president in 2023, asserting his qualifications to lead Nigeria.

Okay.ng reports that this development marks a significant escalation in the internal conflicts within the Labour Party as it seeks to preserve its structure ahead of future elections.
