The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, has issued a stern warning to residents against offering bribes to police officers, emphasizing that such acts constitute a criminal offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act. This directive comes amid rising concerns about police misconduct, including unlawful detentions and extortion.

Okay.ng reports that the commissioner has also directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to immediately release individuals detained for minor, bailable offences. This follows numerous complaints from residents about police officers unlawfully holding suspects and demanding payment before initiating investigations.

In a statement released on Saturday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, CP Adewale condemned these illegal practices as gross violations of constitutional rights and the Inspector-General of Police’s directives. He emphasized, “Bail is free, and any officer found demanding money for bail or documentation will face strict disciplinary action.”

The commissioner further warned officers to desist from interfering in civil disputes, particularly land-related cases, which fall outside police jurisdiction. “Also, police must not intervene in civil matters, particularly land-related disputes, which lie outside their jurisdiction. Any officer in violation, and supervisors who fail to enforce this directive, will be held accountable,” he added.

CP Adewale also criticized the growing trend of extortion through demands for payment before investigations commence, labeling it an abuse of office that will be punished severely. He cautioned the public against offering bribes or misusing the police for personal vendettas or debt recovery. “Members of the public are also cautioned against offering bribes, as this is a criminal offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act. Citizens are advised not to misuse the Police for debt recovery or personal vendettas,” he stated.

To promote transparency and accountability, the FCT Police Command has set up a Complaint Response Unit (CRU) reachable at 08107314192, urging residents to report any police misconduct.
