President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the prestigious national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in recognition of his significant contributions to global health, education, and poverty alleviation efforts, particularly through partnerships in Nigeria.

The honour was bestowed on Gates during a high-level event held in Lagos on Tuesday, which was attended by top government officials, including Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, and Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, among others.

President Tinubu praised Gates for his long-standing support of Nigeria’s health and development goals through strategic philanthropy and public-private collaborations that have transformed millions of lives.

Okay.ng reports that Bill Gates is currently visiting Nigeria to meet with President Tinubu and senior government officials as part of a broader initiative to support reforms in Nigeria’s primary healthcare system.

His itinerary includes participation in a Goalkeepers Nigeria event, focused on driving Africa’s innovation future, as well as engagements with local scientists and partners advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and scalable health solutions in the country.

The Gates Foundation recently announced a monumental $200 billion commitment over the next 20 years to accelerate progress in saving and improving lives, particularly across Africa. Gates’ visit further underscores the foundation’s deepening investment in strengthening health systems and supporting scientific innovation across the continent.

Over the years, the Gates Foundation has played a pivotal role in vaccine development, disease eradication efforts, and health systems strengthening in Nigeria and other African nations.

Its work with partners such as Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria has contributed to saving over 80 million lives globally.
