In a solemn statement on Friday, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) mourned the tragic loss of lives and destruction caused by recent flooding in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. The flood, which claimed at least 21 lives and destroyed property worth millions of Naira, has left the community grappling with immense hardship.

AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, chairman of the NGF and governor of Kwara State, expressed shock at the scale of the disaster. “We are shocked by the magnitude of the flooding, which has resulted in the loss of lives and properties in the community,” he said. The forum extended its deepest sympathies to Governor Usman Bago, the government, and the people of Niger State.

The NGF praised the Niger State Government’s swift intervention and coordination with emergency responders to aid flood victims. AbdulRazaq highlighted the incident as a stark reminder of climate change’s growing impact. “We commit ourselves as leaders of our people to continue to work with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to not only help our people cope with this global challenge but also to strengthen mitigative actions and relief institutions,” he said.

The forum called on all citizens to support government efforts to mitigate climate change and assist those affected by the disaster. “We pray God to console families who have lost loved ones and properties in the Mokwa incident,” AbdulRazaq added, urging unity and cooperation in these trying times.
