A tragic domestic violence incident occurred in Onicha Ngwa community, Abia State, when Mr. Udochi Amala allegedly set fire to himself, his wife, Mrs. Amarachi Amala, and their three children between 1am and 2am on Saturday, citing suspicion of his wife’s infidelity.

One daughter died from severe burns sustained in the fire, while Mrs. Amarachi and two other children are hospitalized and reportedly fighting for their lives. An unconfirmed source indicated that Mrs. Amala and the two children later died in hospital.

Udochi, a resident of Amapuihe village in Osisioma LGA, tried to flee but was arrested. He confessed, “I have an issue with my wife, and I did not know that it would get to this extent. I am tired of this life,” while denying having evidence of infidelity.

The Abia State Police Command confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing. DSP Maureen Chinaka stated, “Yes, the Police are aware. Investigation is ongoing.”

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Abia branch condemned the act, calling it a gross violation of human rights and dignity. FIDA demanded a thorough investigation and justice for the victims, urging support and protection for survivors of domestic violence and child abuse.

This tragic event has sparked outrage and calls for stronger protective measures for vulnerable families in Abia State.
