Somalia has officially joined the growing list of nations benefiting from SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service. A significant development confirmed by both Elon Musk via his social media platform X and the Somali government, this launch holds the promise of transforming internet access across the country, particularly in its remote regions.
“We have been in talks with this company (Starlink) for a period of two and half years. We gave them the licence today,” stated Mustafa Yasiin, director of communication in Somalia’s telecommunications ministry, in a video released by the state news agency SONNA. This long-awaited approval signals a crucial step towards enhancing Somalia’s digital infrastructure.
The impact of improved internet connectivity cannot be overstated. For many Somalis, particularly those residing in rural and underserved areas, reliable internet access has remained elusive. Starlink’s low-latency, high-speed satellite internet aims to bridge this digital divide.
“We hope Starlink will increase the quality of the existing internet in Somalia and will make the internet service reach more remote areas,” Yasiin added. This sentiment reflects the broader aspirations of the Somali government to leverage technology for national development.
The introduction of Starlink in Somalia represents more than just a technological advancement. It’s about empowering communities, fostering economic growth, and facilitating access to essential services like education and healthcare. In a nation where traditional infrastructure faces significant challenges, satellite internet offers a viable and efficient solution.

The two and a half years of negotiations highlight the meticulous planning and regulatory compliance required for such a deployment. It also underscores the Somali government’s commitment to improving its telecommunications sector. By granting Starlink a license, they are opening the door to increased competition and innovation within the internet service provider market.
SpaceX’s Starlink system utilizes a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver internet connectivity. This technology is particularly effective in regions where laying fiber optic cables or building traditional cellular towers is impractical or cost-prohibitive.
The launch in Somalia is part of Starlink’s broader mission to provide internet access to underserved populations worldwide. Elon Musk’s vision of a globally connected world is gradually becoming a reality, and Somalia is now a part of that vision.
While challenges remain, such as affordability and ensuring consistent service in all areas, the potential benefits are immense. The introduction of Starlink in Somalia marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards digital inclusion.
