MTN Nigeria and MTN Group have paid heartfelt tribute to Dr. Pascal Gabriel Dozie, OON, CON, the founding Chairman of MTN Nigeria, following his recent passing.
In an emotional statement, the telecoms giant described Dr. Dozie as “a steady hand” and “a titan of industry,” who played a transformative role in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector and left behind an enduring legacy that will shape generations to come.
Dr. Dozie, widely respected for his visionary leadership, was instrumental in laying the foundation for mobile telephony in Nigeria.
He played a key role in securing early investments and guiding MTN Nigeria through its formative years.
On May 16, 2001, he made the very first call on the MTN network—an iconic moment that marked the dawn of a new era in Nigeria’s digital journey.
For 18 years, from 2001 to 2019, Dr. Dozie served as Chairman of MTN Nigeria. Under his watch, the company achieved major milestones including the incorporation of the MTN Nigeria Foundation in 2004, the launch of one of Africa’s largest switching centres in 2010, and the company’s listing on the premium board of the Nigerian Exchange in 2019.
“His unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential and his dedication to its development were truly inspiring,” said Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria.
“His leadership laid the foundation for our success, and his legacy will continue to guide us.”
Ralph Mupita, President & CEO of MTN Group, echoed the sentiment, describing Dr. Dozie as a man whose “commitment to excellence and integrity set a standard that we continue to uphold.”
Beyond telecommunications, Dr. Dozie’s influence spanned banking, education, and public service. He was the founder of Diamond Bank, a past Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and a former Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group.
He mentored countless individuals and was known for his humility, thoughtfulness, and strength of character.
Fondly known as “PGD,” he was a recipient of national honours including the Officer and Commander of the Order of the Niger (OON and CON).
Despite these accolades, MTN remembers him most for his humanity, his grace under pressure, and his unshakeable belief in Nigeria’s promise.
“We are profoundly grateful for his time with us,” the company stated. “His memory will remain a guiding light for MTN, Nigeria’s business community, and everyone who shares his commitment to progress built on integrity and service.”
