In a bid to modernize technical and vocational education, the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has unveiled ambitious plans to fully digitalize its examination processes. This initiative, spearheaded by newly appointed Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed Aminu, aims to bolster operational efficiency while simultaneously combating persistent issues of examination malpractice.
Aminu, addressing staff at the board’s headquarters in Benin City, articulated a vision centered on leveraging technology to streamline operations and enhance the integrity of NABTEB’s certifications. “We will accelerate the digitalisation of our examination processes, from registration to result processing and certificate issuance, to enhance efficiency and reduce errors,” he affirmed. This commitment signals a pivotal shift towards a more robust and technologically advanced examination system.
The core of this digital transformation lies in the expanded adoption of Computer-Based Testing (CBT). As Aminu noted, this strategic move aligns with global trends and acknowledges the increasing digital literacy among candidates. “We are responding to the times,” one might say, as the world rapidly embraces digital solutions. But this transition is not merely about keeping pace; it’s about securing the future of technical education.
To ensure the credibility of its examinations, NABTEB plans to implement stringent security measures, including biometric verification, encrypted question papers, and real-time monitoring systems. These measures are designed to preempt and deter malpractice, thereby strengthening public trust in NABTEB certificates. “We must restore and maintain the confidence of our stakeholders,” Dr. Aminu emphasized, acknowledging the critical role of public perception in the board’s success.
For candidates, this means faster access to results and certificates, reduced logistical hurdles, and a more secure examination environment. For employers and tertiary institutions, it translates to easier verification of credentials, streamlining recruitment and admission processes. NABTEB’s existing digital certificate platform, launched for certificates from 2017 to 2022, already demonstrates the efficiency and accessibility benefits of this digital shift.
Beyond the technological overhaul, Aminu has also pledged to prioritize staff welfare through capacity-building programs. This investment in human capital aims to equip staff with the necessary skills to navigate the evolving landscape of educational assessment and administration. “Our staff are our greatest asset, and their development is paramount,” he stated. This focus on staff development is crucial, as the success of any technological implementation hinges on the competence and adaptability of those who manage it.

Furthermore, NABTEB intends to strengthen collaborations with schools, technical institutions, government agencies, and industry partners to address systemic challenges and drive improvements. “NABTEB will further engage schools, technical institutions, government agencies, and industry partners to tackle challenges and drive systemic improvements,” he asserted. This collaborative approach recognizes the interconnectedness of the education ecosystem and the necessity of collective effort to achieve meaningful reform.
Olugbenga Ojogbede, Director of Special Duties, expressed confidence in Dr. Aminu’s leadership, highlighting the timeliness of his appointment. “With your experience and vision, we believe you will steer NABTEB to greater heights,” Ojogbede affirmed, reflecting the collective optimism within the board.
The Federal Ministry of Education’s policy transition from Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) to Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs) further underscores the government’s commitment to aligning technical education with contemporary workforce demands. This policy shift, coupled with NABTEB’s digital initiative, signals a comprehensive effort to revitalize technical and vocational training in Nigeria.
In essence, NABTEB’s digital revolution is not merely an administrative upgrade; it’s a strategic investment in the future of Nigeria’s workforce. By embracing technology and prioritizing integrity, NABTEB aims to empower individuals with credible qualifications, fostering economic growth and social development.
