Former Nigerian senator Shehu Sani has shed light on the risks of exposing legislative financial details, recalling how his past revelations on lawmakers’ earnings nearly led to severe consequences.

In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Sani recounted the backlash he faced after publicly disclosing the salaries and allowances of Nigerian senators.

“When I publicly disclosed the salaries and allowances of the Senators, it nearly earned me a SIX months suspension if not for Divine Intervention, Saraki and Ekwerenmadu’s immediate rescue,” he stated.

His remarks underscore the challenges whistleblowers face within the country’s political landscape. Sani, who served as a senator from 2015 to 2019, had previously revealed details of lawmakers’ financial entitlements, a disclosure that sparked widespread debate on government transparency and accountability.

Reflecting on the experience, Sani warned about the dangers of exposing sensitive information without support from influential figures.

“Just know that if you are there and you blow whistle too loudly, you will be ‘On your Own,’” he cautioned. His statement highlights the political isolation that often follows whistleblowing efforts.

Sani further emphasized the reluctance of lawmakers to stand in solidarity with those who choose to expose internal financial dealings.

“No senator go bring him head or neck to support you,” he remarked, pointing to a culture of self-preservation among legislators.
