The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday demonstrated its unwavering support for Speaker Mojisola Meranda, passing a resounding vote of confidence amidst a morning security operation that saw the offices of key officials sealed by the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Police.

This dramatic turn of events unfolded as tensions within the Assembly continue to simmer following the controversial removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in January. The swift and decisive vote of confidence, however, sent a clear message: lawmakers stand firmly behind their current leadership.

“Madam Speaker, we have absolute confidence in your leadership and there is no better way to show this than to pass a vote of confidence on you to lead us,” declared the member representing Oshodi lsolo State Constituency II, urging his colleagues to support the motion.

The move to express confidence in Speaker Meranda came shortly after a tense morning that saw a heavy security presence descend upon the Assembly premises in Alausa, Ikeja. The operation, which reportedly involved the sealing of the offices of the Speaker, her deputy, and the Clerk of the House, raised immediate concerns about the stability of the legislative branch.

Speaker Meranda, arriving at the Assembly amidst a flurry of activity and heightened security, was greeted with a warm welcome from her colleagues. The show of support from fellow lawmakers underscored the gravity of the situation and the determination to maintain the smooth functioning of the Assembly.

The current crisis stems from the removal of former Speaker Obasa in January by a 32-3 vote. Obasa, who was out of the country at the time, has since launched a legal challenge against his removal, alleging procedural irregularities and violations of legislative rules.

His legal team, led by renowned lawyer Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, has filed a lawsuit in the Ikeja Division of the Lagos State High Court, seeking an expedited hearing and a swift resolution to the matter. Obasa contends that the Assembly proceedings that led to his removal were conducted unlawfully, lacking the necessary quorum and adhering to proper parliamentary procedures.

The legal battle has injected a significant dose of uncertainty into the Assembly’s operations, raising questions about the legitimacy of the current leadership and the stability of the legislative process.

Monday’s vote of confidence, however, served as a powerful statement of unity and support for Speaker Meranda. It also underscored the determination of the Assembly to navigate these turbulent waters and continue to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities to the people of Lagos State.
