The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of Eric Chelle, a former Mali national team coach, as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

The NFF made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday, following the endorsement of Chelle’s appointment by the federation’s executive committee.

The decision was based on a recommendation from the NFF’s technical and development sub-committee on January 2.

Chelle, 47, brings a wealth of experience to the Super Eagles. He previously served as Mali’s head coach during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, where he led the team to the quarterfinals before losing to the hosts in extra time.

In addition to his national team experience, Chelle has managed several clubs, including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.

As a player, Chelle earned five caps for Mali’s senior national team and featured for clubs such as Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais in France.

The NFF confirmed that Chelle’s appointment takes effect immediately, with his primary task being to guide Nigeria to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.

The Malian tactician faces an uphill challenge, as the Super Eagles are currently fifth in Group C of the World Cup qualifiers, winless after four games.

His first test will come in March, when Nigeria faces Rwanda and Zimbabwe in the next round of qualifiers.
