The Coalition of Concerned Citizens of Kaduna State has distanced itself from the planned October 1 protests, urging the people of the state to prioritise constructive engagement over disruption.

Addressing journalists in Kaduna on Monday, the coalition’s spokesperson, Yusuf Lawal, stressed the group’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and development.

“We firmly reject any maliciously stage-managed protests that could lead to chaos and violence. October 1 should be a day of celebration, honouring our past heroes, not a day for destruction and civil unrest,” he said.

Lawal acknowledged the government’s efforts to improve the quality of life for citizens, particularly through the establishment of skill acquisition centres, scheduled to commence in December.

“We commend the government’s initiatives and urge them to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection process,” he added, while also expressing concerns about the socio-economic impacts of protests, including economic disruption and loss of life.

According to him, instead of protesting, the coalition encourages citizens to participate in Local Government elections and advocate for constructive change, saying this would provide a vital platform for voicing their concerns.

“Ensure accessibility, provide diverse programmes, engage qualified instructors, and establish support services,” Lawal stated.

Meanwhile, the state command of the Nigeria Police Force has deployed officers to potential flashpoints as organisers of the October 1 protest insist on proceeding with their demonstration on Independence Day.

If the protest goes ahead, it will be the second time in two months that discontented Nigerians have taken to the streets in response to the hardship caused by the hike in petrol prices, electricity tariffs, and the floating of the naira under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
