The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Edo State to September 15, 2024, ahead of the state’s governorship election on September 21.

Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner, made the announcement in Benin, stating that the extension would run from September 13 to September 15, following appeals from various stakeholders who requested more time for voters to collect their PVCs.

“The commission held an interactive meeting with stakeholders in Benin ahead of the governorship election. The meeting was well attended by chairmen of political parties, candidates, traditional and religious leaders, security agencies, civil society organisations, and the media,” Olumekun said.

He explained that INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, along with Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, addressed concerns related to the election and security at the meeting. As a result, INEC granted the three-day extension to allow more voters to collect their cards.

“The cards will be available for collection in our 18 local government offices across the state from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily,” Olumekun added.

He urged registered voters who have not yet collected their PVCs to take advantage of the extension, reminding the public that collection by proxy is not allowed in accordance with INEC’s policy.
