Onyeka Onwenu, the late iconic Nigerian singer, has been laid to rest in Lagos after her sudden collapse and passing during an event in late July, reports Okay.ng.

Onwenu, who collapsed at the 80th birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, founder of Emzor Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Company, on July 30, was confirmed dead at Reddington Hospital in Lagos.

The tragic incident occurred shortly after her performance at the event, which left many in shock.

Her service of songs was held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju and saw attendance from numerous prominent figures, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who was also present at the fateful event.

The burial ceremony took place at the Ebony Vaults in Ikoyi, Lagos, where family members, friends, and clergymen gathered to pay their last respects. As Onwenu’s body was lowered into the grave, those in attendance reflected on her remarkable life and contributions to Nigerian culture.

Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, the sons of the late singer, shared that doctors made every possible effort to save her life. They described their mother as a “national treasure, an icon and legend” whose legacy will continue to resonate deeply.

Expressing their gratitude for the overwhelming support from the public and dignitaries, Abraham and Tijani acknowledged the profound impact their mother had on many lives.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate during the 2023 election, recalled the moments leading up to Onwenu’s collapse.

“Just about a few minutes after her performance, she sat down and drank some water and immediately collapsed, and was rushed to the hospital,” Obi said.

“I followed her to the hospital. I watched in pain as the doctors and medical staff fought tirelessly and battled to save her life, doing everything possible to bring her back to life but eventually came out with the sad news that she was gone. Despite their valiant efforts, she sadly passed away after over two hours of intense struggle,” he recounted.
