The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has cautioned journalists against spreading misinformation and fake news, stating that it can be as harmful as terrorism. He made this statement at a two-day training workshop on effective reporting of terrorism for security and defence correspondents.

The minister applauded the media’s efforts in the counter-terrorism war but emphasized the importance of responsible reporting. He noted that sensational reporting can inadvertently glorify terrorist acts and spread fear, while misinformation and fake news can be equally damaging.

Idris urged defence correspondents to work with security experts, psychologists, and community leaders to provide a comprehensive perspective on terrorism. He encouraged the use of data and research to enhance the credibility and depth of their stories.

The minister emphasized the importance of projecting successful initiatives and programmes that counter radicalization and rehabilitate repentant terrorists. He appealed to the media to continue playing a pivotal role in counter-terrorism efforts by offering compelling, positive alternatives to terrorist ideologies.
