Vice President Kashim Shettima has described the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, as an institution that must be jealously guarded and protected. This statement comes after an alarm was raised by the Muslim Rights Council (MURIC) that the Sokoto government was allegedly plotting to depose the Sultan.

Speaking at the North West Peace and Security Summit in Katsina State, Shettima emphasized that the Sultan represents an idea and an institution that needs to be protected and promoted for the growth of the nation. He urged the Sokoto government to recognize the Sultan’s significance and ensure his safety and well-being.

The Vice President’s statement was in response to concerns raised by MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, following the deposition of 15 traditional rulers in Sokoto for various offenses. Shettima’s message was addressed to the Sokoto government through the state’s deputy governor, who was present at the summit.

This development highlights the importance of traditional institutions in Nigeria and the need for their preservation and protection. The Sultan of Sokoto is a revered figure in the country, and any threat to his position is seen as a concern for the entire nation.
