The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed an investigation into the source of a report circulating in the media alleging certificate forgery by Ondo Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The Police clarified that the alleged signatory of the report, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, did not have authorization to release such information on behalf of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) or any other department within the Nigeria Police Force.

Governor Aiyedatiwa had previously refuted reports of his involvement in a certificate forgery scandal, attributing it to political detractors. He assumed office on December 27, 2023, following the death of his predecessor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Friday, the Nigeria Police Force addressed the circulation of a document containing allegations against Governor Aiyedatiwa, including fraudulent misrepresentation, certificate forgery, examination malpractice, and perjury.

The Police clarified that the document did not originate from the Nigeria Police Force and emphasized ongoing efforts to investigate its origin and circulation.

Adejobi urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from spreading unverified information that could tarnish the reputation of individuals or public officials. He assured that any official communication or report regarding investigations conducted by the Nigeria Police Force would be released through appropriate channels.
