Power Station Collapses, Blackout Hits Abuja and Kogi

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and certain areas in Kogi State are currently grappling with power outages due to technical glitches in the power transmission substation.

The affected areas fall under the coverage of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), which has attributed the blackout to a technical fault on the 33kv feeder k6 from AT9 Karu Transmission Station, managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Specifically, residents in Zamani Estate, Abacha Road Mararaba, Ruga Juli, Old Karu Road, Glory Estate, and surrounding environs in Abuja have been impacted by the power outage.

The AEDC has assured customers that the TCN maintenance crew is diligently working to restore electricity supply to the affected areas. However, the inconvenience caused by the blackout has been acknowledged, with efforts underway to rectify the situation promptly.

Earlier announcements from the TCN indicated planned maintenance on its power transformers in the 132/33kV Okene Transmission Substation. Consequently, Abuja DisCo will be unable to provide power to customers in Okene, Kabba, Ososo, and Ikare during the maintenance period.

In response to the ongoing power challenges, the TCN recently commissioned a 100MVA 132/33kV power transformer at its Port Harcourt Main Transmission Substation, in collaboration with the World Bank.

The initiative aims to enhance the substation’s bulk transmission capability, benefiting industries and communities in the Trans Amadi industrial environment and beyond.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has expressed concern over the deteriorating power situation across the country and has summoned the management of both the AEDC and the TCN.

However, the persistent blame on factors like gas shortage, vandalism, and energy theft by the Discos and the TCN has raised skepticism about the root causes of the ongoing power challenges.
