The National Population Commission (NPC) has clarified that birth certificates will not be issued to individuals older than 18 years of age, as they will receive an Attestation of Birth instead.

This announcement was made by the NPC State Director in Oyo State, Mr. Akin Oyetunde, during a briefing with journalists in Ibadan.

According to Oyetunde, the NPC operates under an Act established in 1992, which dictates that individuals born before this time are ineligible for birth certificates. Instead, they will be provided with an Attestation of Birth.

“While those below 18 years will be issued birth certificates by the Commission, individuals born before 1992 or those above 18 years will receive Attestation of Birth,” Oyetunde clarified.

He also emphasized the availability of birth and death registration centers in all local governments across Oyo State, ensuring accessibility for residents to obtain necessary documentation.

Oyetunde assured that the certificates issued at these centers are uniform and widely accepted.

Regarding the postponed National Population and Housing Census initially scheduled for 2023, Oyetunde affirmed that all preparations have been completed, awaiting the green light from the Federal Government to commence the exercise.

“We are prepared and only need the Federal Government to give the go-ahead. All materials for the exercise have been distributed to local governments,” he stated.

“All those who are to take part in the census have been trained; all is set to hit the ground running.”
