The Supreme Court has upheld the five-year sentence of former House of Representatives member, Farouk Lawan.

Lawan faced charges for receiving a $500,000 bribe from businessman Femi Otedola during a legislative probe into the fuel subsidy regime back in 2012.

Despite Lawan’s appeal to set aside the February 24, 2022 judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had sentenced him to a five-year jail term, the Supreme Court maintained the verdict. Interestingly, Lawan was discharged on two out of the three counts on the corruption charge brought against him by the Federal Government.

This decision marks a significant legal outcome in the high-profile bribery case, shedding light on the consequences of corruption within the political sphere.
