The Super Eagles of Nigeria emerged triumphant in a hard-fought battle against the Elephants of Ivory Coast during their second game at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The encounter took place at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé, Abidjan, on Thursday, with William Troost-Ekong’s second-half penalty proving to be the decisive factor.

The victory marked the Super Eagles’ first win in a competitive match since September 2023, breaking a four-game winless streak and alleviating the mounting pressure on the team. The win also positioned Nigeria well in the group standings.

Under the guidance of head coach Jose Peseiro, the Eagles entered the game determined to bounce back from their 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in the opening match.

Peseiro made a single change to the starting lineup, bringing in Calvin Bassey to replace the injured Alhassan Yusuf.

From the early minutes, the Super Eagles showcased their dominance despite playing against the host country.

Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze demonstrated skillful plays, keeping the Ivorian defense on their toes.

The turning point came in the second half when Ousmane Diomande’s challenge on Osimhen resulted in a penalty for Nigeria.

Troost-Ekong stepped up confidently, sending a powerful shot down the middle to secure the much-needed goal.

The Eagles successfully defended their lead, clinching a crucial victory that propelled them to second place in the group with four points. With one more group game to play against Guinea-Bissau on January 22.
