The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on officers of the anti-graft agency to prioritize the rule of law in the execution of arrests and bail procedures.

In his New Year address to EFCC staff, shared on the agency’s official X account, Olukoyede underscored the importance of adhering to legal standards in the fight against corruption.

Highlighting the crucial role of the EFCC in Nigeria’s pursuit of growth and development, Olukoyede expressed the need for the agency to implement mechanisms that would facilitate its mandate effectively.

“The major objective of the war against corruption and financial crimes is to drive economic development and create wealth and job opportunities for the populace. We need to come to these realities and operate by them,” he stated.

Olukoyede emphasized that the EFCC, as a vital government agency, possesses the capacity to contribute significantly to the country’s developmental index.

Addressing a specific aspect of the agency’s operations, the EFCC chairman announced a review of the guidelines governing arrests and bail procedures.

He stressed the importance of aligning with international best practices in law enforcement and urged investigators to conduct operations in a manner that upholds the rule of law.

“We are a civilized anti-graft agency. Arrest and bail would henceforth be done in line with the rule of law. Our investigators should particularly take note of this,” Olukoyede affirmed.
