Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced that the automation of passport applications in Nigeria has reached 99% completion and is set to go live next week.

The new method is expected to streamline the application process, allowing applicants to complete most steps from the comfort of their homes.

Appearing on Channels Television on Tuesday evening, Tunji-Ojo emphasized the government’s commitment to providing a more efficient and convenient passport application system.

He stated that the upcoming changes would significantly reduce the need for applicants to visit immigration passport offices.

“We gave a date. We said December. That was what we said. I can tell you, we’re 99% done. In fact, we’ve done the testing. We should be going live next week or so,” the minister explained.

“As I said, that would ensure that all Nigerians have to do at passport centres is just biometrics. Just take your fingerprint, that’s all.

“Every other thing will be done in the comfort of your home, including uploading your passports. It would have come live about two weeks ago but I saw some errors when they came to do the presentation and I said no.”
