Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has declared three days of mourning for the victims of the train/bus accident that occurred in the Shogunle area of the state.

The governor visited the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja to assess the condition of the victims of the accident.

Speaking during the visit, Sanwo-Olu described the accident as a “totally avoidable incident that simply requires patience and the need to follow proper transportation protocol.”

He added that the accident was caused by the failure of the bus driver to follow safety procedures.

The bus involved in the accident was bus number 33, one of the fleets of about 50 staff buses used by workers of the Lagos state government. The driver of the bus has handed himself over to the Police.

According to the governor, there were 85 passengers on board the bus, with six deaths, 42 moderate injuries, 29 serious injuries, and 8 mild injuries according to the LASUTH classification scale.

“Lagos is in a state of mourning, and for the next three days, I am suspending all campaign activities,” the governor said.

“All flags will be flown at half mast, and tomorrow all civil servants will work till 12 noon before returning home to be with their loved ones during this trying time.”
