The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, also known as the WAEC GCE Second Series.

The examination was conducted in Nigeria between October 27 and December 20, 2023.

In this article, we will answer some of the frequently asked questions about the 2023 WAEC GCE Result Second Series and provide you with the latest update on how to check your result online or via SMS.

How many candidates sat for the 2023 WAEC GCE Second Series?

According to WAEC, a total of 85,600 candidates, representing a 10.07% increase from the 2022 entry figure of 77,768, entered for the examination, while 80,904 candidates sat the examination at 568 centres across the country. Out of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 39,790 were males while 41,114 were females, representing 49.18% and 50.82%, respectively.

How many candidates obtained credit and above in five subjects?

The analysis of the performance of the candidates shows that out of the 80,904 candidates that sat the examination, 46,267 candidates, representing 57.19%, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects (with or without English Language and/or Mathematics).

How many candidates had their results withheld or cancelled?

Out of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 78,419 candidates, representing 96.93%, had their results fully processed and released, while 2,485 candidates, representing 3.07%, had a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors traceable to them. However, WAEC said that efforts were being made to speedily complete the processing to enable all the affected candidates to get their results fully processed and released soon.

WAEC also said that some of the results were withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice. The cases were being investigated and reports of the investigations would be presented to the appropriate Committee of the Council for determination.

To check your 2023 WAEC GCE Result Second Series online, you need to follow these steps:

  • Visit the WAEC result-checking portal at www.waecdirect.org.
  • Enter your 10-digit WAEC Examination Number (This is your 7-Digit centre number followed by your 3-digit candidate number e.g., 4123456789).
  • Enter the 4 digits of your Examination Year e.g., 2023.
  • Select the Type of Examination i.e., PRIVATE CANDIDATE RESULT.
  • Enter the Card Serial Number found on the reverse side of your Scratch card.
  • Enter the Personal Identification Number (PIN) on your Scratch card.
  • Click Submit and wait for the results window to come up.

To check your 2023 WAEC GCE Result Second Series via SMS, you need to follow these steps:

  • Type WAECExamNoPIN*ExamYear on your phone (as a single message).
  • Send to 32327 (MTN, Airtel & Glo subscribers).
  • You will receive a message instantly containing your statement of result (SMS Cost N30 Only).
