The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has assured the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that it will provide the required cash and support services for the upcoming general elections.

The CBN’s commitment comes in the wake of concerns about the bank’s cash withdrawal limit policy potentially hindering the transportation of election materials.

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, made this clear in a meeting with INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who led a high-powered delegation to the CBN headquarters.

The INEC Chairman was there to solicit the bank’s support for the election.

Emefiele emphasized that the CBN would make cash available if required, after the INEC had made its electronic payment for logistics.

He stated, “The CBN will not allow itself either to be used or to be seen as an agent that frustrates the positive outcome of the election.

“I will make sure we will not allow ourselves to be seen as an agent to frustrate a positive outcome of the election.

“So I give you the commitment that if in this case, after making your electronic payment you require some money to pay transporters, in this case cash, we will make it available.”
