The Benue State Police Command have confirmed the death of 12 bandits and one police officer, Inspector Terfa Anyiatse, during an operation in Buruku Local Government Area. The incident occurred during a raid conducted by the Operation Zenda Joint Task Force.

In a statement released late Wednesday, the state police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, explained that the operatives were ambushed by bandits while en route to a criminal hideout in Agwabi, Tombo ward. The encounter led to an intense gun battle.

According to the statement, “On 19/3/2025 at about 0200hrs, while some operatives were heading to a criminal hideout at Agwabi, Tombo ward, Buruku Local Government Area, they were ambushed by bandits who engaged them in a fierce gunfight. The police responded with superior firepower, overpowering the gang.”

The statement further revealed that 12 bandits were killed during the exchange, while others managed to escape. The injured bandits were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead and later deposited in the morgue. Items recovered from the scene included three AK-47 rifles, six rounds of live ammunition, camouflage uniforms, and assorted charms.
