Tragedy struck the Sokoto Central Market on Monday as a fierce fire ravaged the motorcycle section, leaving devastation in its wake.
According to an eyewitness, the fire erupted early in the morning, engulfing the motorcycle section in flames. Although the cause of the fire remains uncertain, some sources suggested it may have originated from a nearby dump site.
Shehu Muhammad, the chairman of the Motorcycles Marketers Association, expressed dismay over the incident, revealing the extent of the damage incurred. “We cannot quantify the number of motorcycles burnt down by the fire now because the fire is still raging,” he stated. “Many people lost their shops along with their motorcycles because they could not come in time as the fire started around 6 am.”
While firefighting efforts are underway, led by both federal and state fire services, Muhammad acknowledged the challenges in containing the blaze completely. “It will take some time before they can quench it all,” he lamented.
In the aftermath of the fire, Muhammad pleaded with the Sokoto State Government to provide assistance to those affected by the tragedy.
