The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has secured victory in 15 of the 17 chairmanship seats in the recent Local Government Elections in Abia State, held on Saturday, with the Young Progressives Party (YPP) winning the remaining two seats.
The Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof. George Chima, announced the results at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia.
“We have carried out the duty we were inaugurated on September 5 to undertake,” Chima said, adding that the commission went to significant lengths to raise awareness for the elections throughout the state.
Chima highlighted that the election was remarkable, with over 12 political parties participating, which he considered a positive development for the commission.
He described the chairmanship and councillorship polls conducted across the 17 Local Government Areas as free, fair, and credible.
“The elections were a demonstration of the commission’s dedication, focus, and efficiency,” Chima noted, expressing satisfaction that ABSIEC successfully organized the elections within two months—a task that typically requires six to 12 months.
The ZLP secured victories in Isiala Ngwa South, Isiala Ngwa North, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Obingwa, Aba North, Aba South, Isuikwuato, Umunneochi, Arochukwu, Bende, and Ohafia LGAs.
Meanwhile, YPP claimed the remaining chairmanship seats in Osisioma and Ugwunagbo LGAs.
