Members of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) visited the prestigious Transcorp Hilton Abuja on Monday to honor Transcorp Hotels Plc with the Outstanding Employer of the Year 2022 award.
The award was presented to Mrs. Dupe Olusola, Managing Director/CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc, who accepted it on behalf of the company.
This recognition highlights Transcorp Hotels’ commitment to its workforce and its dedication to being a pro-worker employer.
The TUC, which represents various unions, including the Hotel and Personal Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, celebrated the most worker-friendly employers in Nigeria during its Dinner & Awards Night.
Transcorp Hotels stood out among other nominees in the hospitality sector and was the sole hotel acknowledged during the ceremony, which the TUC plans to hold annually.
During the award presentation, TUC Secretary General, Comrade Nuhu Toho, praised Transcorp Hotels Plc for its unwavering dedication to the welfare of its employees. He stated, “The screening process for this award was rigorous. We received nominations from our affiliates across all sectors and thoroughly verified the information provided about each employer. Among over 200 nominees, we narrowed it down to approximately 18, and Transcorp Hotels Plc is one of those deserving employers that we felt should be honored. It is with great pleasure that the Nigerian workers present to you the Outstanding Employer of the Year 2022.”
Toho encouraged Mrs. Olusola to continue the commendable work.
Comrade Toho was joined by Comrade Isaac Egbughara, the Financial Secretary of TUC, Comrade William Adegbe, President of the Hotel and Personal Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, and Tolu Akinmayowa, Assistant Secretary of Industrial Relations of the TUC during the visit.
Expressing her gratitude upon receiving the award, Mrs. Olusola emphasized that Transcorp Hotels’ commitment to its employees is ingrained in the company’s DNA. She highlighted the strong leadership and sound corporate governance demonstrated across the Transcorp Group and its other affiliated companies, which are under the stewardship of Mr. Tony Elumelu, CFR, Chairman of the Transcorp Group.
Mrs. Olusola stated, “This recognition is not just for me; it is for my entire team and the Board of Directors. It is a true honor. We are all aware of the TUC’s active role and their unwavering dedication to employee-related matters. They are the voice that advocates for the people.”
Mrs. Olusola further emphasized Transcorp Hotels’ commitment to prioritizing all stakeholders, including the staff.
She acknowledged that in a guest-oriented industry like hospitality, ensuring the happiness and well-being of employees is paramount. “We are united because, at the end of the day, we share the same goals and values. That’s what truly matters,” she added.
It is worth noting that in December 2022, labour unions in Nigeria’s hospitality sector, including the Hotel and Personal Services Senior Staff (HAPSSSA) and the National Union of Hotel and Personal Services Workers (NUHPSW), commended Transcorp Hotels for its dedication to workers’ welfare. In a joint statement, the unions lauded the management of Transcorp Hilton Abuja for demonstrating a commitment to treating workers with respect and fairness while successfully operating the hotel.
